This trip to France is not an anniversary trip. Nevertheless, one of the things that happened while we were here is that my wife and I celebrated our nineteenth wedding anniversary.
On Tuesday we went to Sainte Chapelle (the Holy Chapel), built by St. Louis, king Louis IX of France, who built it to house several relics, including a portion of the crown of thorns, now housed at Notre Dame.
What can I say? Taking pictures of a church that’s mostly stained glass is kind of difficult, but I gave it a shot.
On our way home from the tour of the sewers, we walked to Les Invalides. They don’t make military hospitals like they used to.
Took advantage of some cool weather over the last couple of days to visit two of Paris’s underground sites, the archaeological crypt and the sewers. Continue reading
On Saturday, we went to the Musée d’Orsay, which is primarily known for their collection of impressionist paintings. This is not an artistic style which I am necessarily very fond of, but the rest of my family is.
On payback Sunday, I dragged the family out in the pouring rain to watch the Tour de France. Which would have been more pleasant if it hadn’t been pouring rain. But the Tour de France was one of my favorite sporing events as a kid, and I wasn’t going to be in Paris and not see it.
Today we went to Notre Dame Cathedral, where we saw both the church and the Treasures of Notre Dame, which is a separate collection of primarily sacred items from the history of the cathedral and of Paris. I didn’t take many pictures, and I don’t see much need to post pictures. If you want to see what Notre Dame looks like, you can look for pictures yourself.
Yes! As it happens, being ridiculously tired last night and going to bed just slightly on the early side of normal worked. I don’t particularly feel any jet lag. Anyway, today was day one in Paris.
Nous sommes arrivés à Paris hier, le 19 juillet.
Our plane arrived at Charles de Gaulle yesterday at about 8:30 AM, or 1:30 AM Minnesota time. I slept for about two hours on the plane before they woke us up for breakfast. Not surprisingly, I and the rest of the family were pretty tired all day long. We got to our apartment in the late morning. We are staying in the fifth arrondissement, i.e. the Latin Quarter.
